Alan Caolo has been an avid saltwater angler for
nearly all his life. Offshore, he has fished for white and blue
marlin, bluefin and yellowfin tuna, dorado, sharks and swordfish.
Inshore, Alan has fished for nearly everything with fins.
He has fly fished extensively in salt water for 16 years. His
experience ranges from stripers, tunny, bonito, bluefish, weakfish
and hickory shad here in the Northeast, to bonefish, permit, tarpon,
barracuda and snook in the tropics. What’s his favorite?
Bonefishing – hands down.
Alan is a creative fly tier who prefers traditional techniques
and materials. Among his creations are the Magic Squid, the Diablo
crab series, the Sole Merkin (a flounder imitation), and the Tailing
Striper Fly – a simple shrimp pattern. But, he considers
himself, above all else in the sport, a fisherman, and his writing
and seminars reflect that.
He has published numerous articles in several major fly fishing
and outdoors periodicals. His work focuses on fishing strategies
and techniques for tropical and cold water species, saltwater
fly pattern development, and the fishing experience in general.
He is the Northeast editor for Fly Fishing & Tying Journal
where he contributes a quarterly column.
Alan is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island’s College
of Engineering. He has authored two books on saltwater fly fishing:
