Cabo
San Lucas, Fishermans Paradise (in my mind). Where to start?
My favorite time to go is during mid to late Oct.The
Bisbee Marlin/Billfish Tournament is around that time and the
Marlin and Dorado are in season. I would get there a week before
or after the tournament to avoid the crowds, unless you plan on entering
in the tournament. The combined prize purses for the 10/05 Bisbee
25th Tournamnet totaled 3 million dollars,thats
not in doneros-big difference. There is plenty of charters to choose
from, I recommend the Solmar
Fleet, they always hook up with the fish,Marlin,Dorado(Mahi-Mahi,as
they call them in Hawaii),Sailfish,Wahoo or Tuna. You have to go
only a couple of miles out for all but the Tuna, for them, you will
have to go about 10-20 miles out.
A
quick story-While waiting in the airport to return home on my 1st
trip, I had a modest sized cooler filled with frozen and smoked
Dorado, yes you can bring your catch home with you on the plane,
a guy walks up next to me with 4 or 5 coolers stacked about 6 ft
high (there are plenty of places to buy the coolers in town). I
had to ask, How many fish did you catch? He answered, one! ,a giant
600+ lb Tuna and about 5-6 hours fighting it!!! I also had seen
the largest Wahoo in my life, just check out the picture.
The best way to arrange a charter is to book in advance over the
phone or internet. There is great surf fishing too, I had caught
several small Rooster fish in the suds with, I'm sorry,my spinning
rod (I didn't want to lose my fly rod and reel to some baggage handler
or whomever) and a 3/8 ounce white or yellow jig. I
had to try yellow, Gary would be pleased! My 1st trip I stayed at
Villa
De Palma, a great resort right in town, and reasonable rates.
The last trip was at the Hotel
Melia, not impressed... The marina is located just a few blocks
away from either hotel. And the how is food you ask? Quite a few
places to choose from. For Italian food, The Galleon Restaurant
and Romeo And Juliet Restaurant rules! For entertainment, Sammy
Haggars Cabo Wabo is it!, 3 levels, 3 stages with live bands, and
alot of Tequlia flowing,
WOW!!! For Mexican food, well,it's everywhere! Just check out The
Giggling Marlin, great Mexican take out and eat in. For breakfast,
The Hotel Real is a good place, alot of tasty choices. Also there
is a great Chinese food restaurant, Lan's in the Plaze Bonita Mall
in town, this guy is from Chicago, and his name is Tony, really,
and he can cook the freshest Chinese food to order, and don't pass
up Enrique's, home of the $9.95 lobster dinner (carribean lobster
tail). Enough of the food (I can't believe I said that!)
If
you go with your better half, you can enjoy a Sunset Cruise, all
drinks included, and they only feed you peanuts, aboard the La
Princesa catamaran, I think it was 50 ft long and roughly about
a 3 hours trip. You can also take a day of sightseeing as well as
golfing or even rent a Baja race car you can drive. There are a
few things to be wary of, if you take a charter and return with
any fish to be fileted and did not pack your fillet knife, the dockmaster
has this provision for you. But, DO
NOT pay in advance, they will ask for a deposit
for the services, tell them you are out of cash at the moment and
get a reciept from the dockmaster for your fish and he will ask
you if you want your catch vacuum packed and/or smoked. Also when
he asks when you depart
for home, lie..... tell him you leave
the day before you do, so you'll get your fish! (they will deliver
to your hotel). I really enjoyed the smoked fish. Also check with
your hotel, the Villa De Palma does this, they will fillet and cook
you catch that evening for you, and keep the frozen fish in their
freezers, just check at the desk. The Palma also has a mini-mall
that has a great deli for your lunches for your fishing trips. You
may want to go into town and do some shopping, there are numerous
shops, yes tackle shops too, all
along the downtown section and don't be afraid to haggle with the
price, the shop owners will comedown as much as 40-50% depending
on what and how much you buy. There are also fishing guides available,
sea and surf guides are available, didn't use them, can't recommend
any, sorry.
A nice place I like to return to for some nite life is El
Squid Roe, a party atmosphere and good food as well-always back
to the food... The money exchange was about 1 dollar to 10 pesos.
I like to browse the website www.solmar.com
for anything that may interest me, charter rates, hotels, car rentals,
etc. If you plan on rental, which I always do,wherever I go, try
to arrange it before you leave the states. There are plenty of places
to rent from, Dollar, Buget, etc...So there it is,Cabo San Lucas,
a great little town on the southernmost tip of the Baja Pennisula.
So much to do, so little time. I'll be going back there as much
as my wife lets me go!!!
CABO
RULES!
